Buffalo Triathlon Updates

Packets Being Prepared
No More Changes We have reached our maximum capacity of 1200+ racers, including charity slots, and are preparing timing chips for packet pickup Fri, Sat, and raceday morning. Racers will have the option of picking up their packets in Edina on Friday evening at the expo and seminar (see below), in Buffalo at Golds Gym on Sat from 4-7pm, or at the registration tent Sunday morning from 6:15-8:15. No further changes/refunds are allowed at this point.

Water Temp Rising
The water temperature of Buffalo Lake was measured at 66 degrees on Wednesday May 23th, 4 degrees warmer than the same date last year. With forecasted daytime highs only in the lower 70s next week, this is expected to rise but possibly to only between 68 and 70 degrees by raceday. With a maximum depth of 30 feet, Buffalo Lake warms quicker than other deeper lakes. Water temp last year was 71 degrees. While racers are encouraged to wear wetsuits, especially for the Olympic course, plenty of Sprint course racers historically go without and are still alive to talk about it. All athletes are encouraged to complete at least one trial open water swim prior to the race. For racers wishing to practice on the course, paddleboat rentals are available at Sturges Park for those who have an escort available, which is recommended for safety from motorboat traffic.

Texas Style Barbeque Included in Registration Fee Once Again
This year your registration fee includes a full Texas Style Barbeque catered by Evergreen Restaurant. Plan on joining all your fellow triathletes on the lawn in front of the band shell for post race muscle glycogen replacement during the awards ceremony! Meals will be available for purchase for spectators.

Bike Giveaway Open to All Participants
Once again Buffalo Triathlon has teamed up with Erik's Bike Shop to give all racers a chance to win a 2007 Specialized Transition Comp Bike, valued at $1800. The drawing will take place following the awards ceremony. All racers are automatically entered in the drawing, however, you must be present to win. The winner will claim the bike at Erik's to ensure proper sizing and fit.

Over $10,000 in Total Prizes for 2007!
This year, Buffalo Triathlon will be awarding over $10,000 in prizes to top finishers. See Awards/Results page for a breakdown of age group categories and to see last year's winners. The Elite purse this year consists of $1,000 cash for each the top male and female, $500 each for second male and female, and $250 for each third place. For a list of athletes currently registered in the Elite category, see Participants page. There is no Elite division for the Sprint course.

Race is Full!

The 2007 Buffalo Triathlon has reached full capacity of 1200 and registration is now closed. Demand has been strong for this year's race, but race management is striving to control growth so as to maintain the quality and friendly feel of this "small town" event which is now the 2nd largest triathlon in the state! We have developed a limited waitlist of charity slots for those wishing to be guaranteed the slot of a no-show athlete on raceday. For details, contact Registration Coordinator Steve Edmonson at edmonsj@wwdb.org.

Gatorade Pick Ups Buffalo as Sole Sponsored MN Race

The 2007 Buffalo Triathlon has been selected to be the only race in Minnesota to be sponsored by Gatorade this year apart from state's race of the Irongirl duathlon series. This comes as quite an honor considering the number of other great races in the state such as the Lifetime Fitness Triathlon and Grandma's and Twin Cities Marathons. Gatorade's Endurance Formula will be on both the bike and run courses this year in lemon-lime flavor. Endurance Formula is specially formulated for the needs of endurance athletes with extra sodium to help sustain hydration by more closely replacing what is lost in sweat during long distance events. Buffalo Triathlon is pleased to provide local racers with the same hydration found on world class courses including the Ironman World Championship in Kona.

Registration Nearly Full

There are currently only 100 slots left in the 2007 Buffalo Triathlon! We are rapidly approaching our limit of 1200 racers between the two courses. There are still plenty of opportunities for both 2 person and 3 person teams. We will be closing the race to further entries once we have 1200 registrants, which we expect to occur within the next 10 days. We will be accepting requests to change from Olympic to Sprint course, or vice versa, up until May 24 only. After this date, race numbers and heats will be assigned and timing chips prepared, so no further changes will be allowed. If you wish to change courses, or have any other requests regarding registration, please contact Registration Coordinator Steve Edmonson at edmonsj@wwdb.org before May 24. We will also have last minute charity slots available this year. Once the race is full and registration is closed, we will be taking names of individuals wishing to be given a slot on raceday morning (in person at the registration tent at 8:15am) for a $100 fee.

Wetsuit Rentals Available

Athletes wishing to rent an Xterra wetsuit for the race can do so via mail. Buffalo Triathlon has once again partnered with Jim McCann of WetsuitRentals.com to provide triathlon wetsuits for those without wetsuits or those looking to try a triathlon specific suit. Suits will be mailed in mid-May, giving athletes adequate time to do some open water swims prior to raceday. Cost is $35 plus $6 shipping. While wetsuits are not required, they are recommended for speed, safety, and comfort. Water temp of Buffalo Lake on June 3rd is anticipated to be between 65 and 70 degrees. For further information and to rent a wetsuit, go to www.wetsuitrental.com. Instructional triathlon videos on the topic of wetsuits are available for viewing on the site as well.

Wave Start Order

Many racers have had question as to how the wave start to the Buffalo Triathlon works. Waves of approx. 50-60 racers will be launched every two minutes starting at 9am. The first wave will be elite racers only, followed by the Olympic course athletes, youngest to oldest, then Teams, then Sprint athletes, youngest to oldest. We have found that this, while it does mean some faster swimmers will pass younger, slower ones, minimizes congestion in the water. Olympic swimmers are past the first sprint turn bouy before Sprint swimmers arrive. Waves will be assigned just prior to packet pickup. Approximate start times are as follows:

Olympic: age 10-25, 9:02
Olympic: age 25-30, 9:04
Olympic: age 30-40, 9:06
Olympic: age 40-50, 9:08
Olympic: age 50+, 9:10
Teams: (all), 9:12
Sprint: age 10-20, 9:14
Sprint: age 20-30, 9:16 - 9:20
Sprint: age 30-40, 9:22 - 9:30
Sprint: age 40-50, 9:32 - 9:36
Sprint: age 50+, 9:38 - 9:40

The Icehouses are off Buffalo Lake and the Rubber Duckies are getting anxious!

Dear triathlete,

Its hard to believe, but in just 3 months many of you will line up with your friends and family with your feet in the sand at Sturges Park and challenge yourselves in a lake which now hosts only ice fishermen and snowmobilers. We hope many of you are hard at work training for a great start to your summer of better-than-ever fitness. Rest assured, your Buffalo Triathlon Committee is hard at work planning an even bigger and better race for you in 2007. Registration has been brisk since opening in December, and the race is now nearly half full. For a list of participants for 2007, see the participant page, which will update monthly. For those of you yet to register, we encourage you to do so soon, as registration will close when we reach 1200 racers. Please check this page periodically for updates about the 2007 race, including featured athlete appearances, pre-race seminars, and expected race conditions as well as any last minute changes.

Train hard, smart, and enjoy every moment of your journey on the road to a fitter and better you!

Brett Oden, M.D. , Race Director
